Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian citizen who is being held in a security detention center in Evin Prison, has attempted suicide three times since her arrest.
According to Iran Human Rights Network, Kylie Moore Gilbert has been in solitary confinement in Evin Prison for a long time and authorities have been preventing her release or transfer to public wards.
She is not allowed to communicate with other prisoners and is not allowed to receive money or purchase from the prison store like others. Prison officials also prevented her from sending complaint letters.
The unjust, harsh and unbearable conditions on Gilbert have led her to three suicide attempts since her arrest.
Kylie Moore Gilbert traveled to Iran in September 2018 at the invitation of Al-Zahra University and Qom University of Religions to attend the 7th Shiite Studies Conference and detained by security forces on her way back from Iran at the airport. Her arrest was reported by media 10 months after her arrest.
Earlier, Kylie Moore Gilbert had stated in a letter that she had endured psychological torture during her detention and that she had been denied of her basic rights.
Kylie Moore Gilbert was tried in a court in January 2020 on charges of “violating Iran’s national security” and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
She later announced in a letter that Iranian security officials had offered her to spy for the regime in exchange for a reduced sentence. In the letter she wrote that Iranian security officials had told her that her sentence would be reduced to 13 months if she accepted a spy offer for Iran regime.
Kylie Moore Gilbert is a graduate of the University of Cambridge, an assistant professor at the University of Melbourne, and an expert on political issues in the Middle East and the Persian Gulf. He has researched Islam, the Arab Spring, and the Middle East, and has written extensively on these subjects. She also researched the Bahraini Shiite opposition, which is backed by the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In addition to Australian citizenship, Ms. Moore Gilbert also has British citizenship.
